DJ Vadim (aka Vadim Peare) is a prolific DJ and producer born in St. Petersburg, Russia, raised in London and now residing in New York. His music combines hip-hop, soul, reggae and electronica.
Reporter: What influence had the fact you were born in Russia upon your music?
DJ Vadim: I dont think I would be making music if I lived in Russia. I dont think there are the opportunities or influences etc for that. maybe now but not when i started in the late 80′s. u are a product of your envioroment and that is wat my music is – a product of wat i c and hear and feel being based in london and now in nyc and travelling the world…
Reporter: How did you get to work with Yarah Bravo and Blu Rum 13? How was One self born?
DJ Vadim: One self was born from touring the world as russian percussion. we had done this for like 6 years previously and one self was just the idea of us as likeminded people to create wat we had done on the stage to a record…
Reporter: Your music spreads mainly in the underground. Why’s that? What about mass appeal?
DJ Vadim: One’ s statues in the industry is more about promotion than about the actual music u make. Major labels are able to do major promotion whereas smaller labels struggle.
Reporter: You perform an experimental hip hop. What do you keep from traditional hip-hop and what do you add?
DJ Vadim: We make our own sound – some people say its eclectic, some says its electronic, some says its hip hop, some says its… it dont really matter or mean anyhting to me cos we are just trying to make music, good music.
And as trands come and go we continue in our path. We try to make something new built on the foundations laid down by our predessors and inspirations…. u cannot re invent the wheel but we still try to bring it in a new fresh refeshing way.
