Hernan Cattaneo – Live at Pacha, NYC 7-4-2008 Review

Watching the videos of Hernan Cattaneo’s set at Pacha, NYC during July 4th weekend, I cannot help but to think of that typical South American flair usually found in the old soccer shoes of Maradona and among all those Patagonian regions –an intangible mix of energy and hope that envelopes your soul and takes you on a journey very similar to that of John Digweed’s but with a cloudlessly dry sky and a joyous peninsular feel. Cattaneo’s deliverance was powerful yet smooth; throughout the night his tracks were carefully chosen but impromptu enough to create an amazing journey that can only be most accurately described by having experienced it in one’s own flesh. When he dropped Sasha’s Mongoose it literally brought me back into the foggy, sweaty quadrilateral dancefloor of Vagabond’s in Miami, where both Cattaneo himself and Digweed had played during the Saturday night of this past’s WMC 2008. Needless to say, Mongoose is ultra fresh and progressive with a sparkling melody and an atmospheric background that reminds me of Tangerine Dream’s Tangents collection. Following Mongoose, Cattaneo deepened his adventure through a variety of tracks featured in the videos below, which are absolutely breathtaking, to say the least; one in particular (hasn’t been id’d yet) is rather amazing: the calm before the drop, the eloquent progressive build-up, and the profuse crying of the dying electronic horns are all superbly entangled in unison triggering goosebumps on the skin. In the end, one of the last tracks that Hernan shared with all the remaining late-night-goers was a seemingly old-school techno piece with vocals and a modern progressive twist (also featured in Zabiela’s set at Glastonbury Festival, UK last week of June); it was mellow indeed, but still contagious enough to invigorate the last strands of energy left among the crowd and a wise choice to conclude such a palatable experience.
