In a recent interview, Canadian DJ and Producer Deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman) has explicitly expressed his dislike for the modern DJ.

He states,
“It puts me to fucking sleep to be quite honest, I don’t really see the technical merit in playing two songs at the same speed together and it bores me to fucking tears and hopefully with all due respect to the dj type that will fucking go the way of the dinosaur id like them to dis-a-fucking-pear. Joel continued, its so middle man,they’re like fucking lawyers. You need them, but they’re fucking ****s. God bless them they’re my number one customer right so I’m not gonna go diss every fucking DJ. But to say you become this massive up on a podium performer by playing other peoples productions at the same speed as someone else’s productions and fading between the two of them, I don’t get it.”

Maybe he’s jealous that people are not into his music when he plays live. Just check out some of his youtube videos, and see how “bored” the crowd is and compare it to other DJs videos. All he plays is his own tracks which is a straight line for however long he’s playing which he should stick up his own ass. He must think its cool to wear that mouse helmet and start up a thread to talk shit about DJs to get more attention. :D

I feel like this is ridiculous what he is saying is nonsense. He himself is doing the same thing a dj does taking a beat and laying it over music to make a dance track. He is djing with a computer and let me tell you mastering the decks is not easy at all. Then you have reading the crowd to add to that challenge. If your playing your tunes that you have made to an audience and they dont like it there is no recovery. Frankley i have seen videos and i think his whole setup is a publicity act and im sick of it. I have told many of my friend djs i think his music is repatitive and shitty. I know many friends who will never buy another one of his tracks. I think he is mad because as dj’s we are taking credit in his mind for things he has made. When really we are exposing him to a world audience who has never heard of him before. I’m a fan of his production, but screw asshats like him. Any DJ knows s/he is just syncing two records and doing overlays. Track selection, key, tone, style and timing clearly have NOTHING to do with it.Duh.Welcome to the 21st century you raving loon. Deadmau5 explains on a personal blog entry on http://www.myspace.com/deadmau5 that he NEVER said he hated DJs. Come on…do you think that this Irish magazine would have had the same readers with an article called “Deadmau5 talks about his live shows”?
This article is just not simple backed by anything that lies. If someone, ever, has reached a global level with his own productions, and staying true to his roots, then this person is Joel Zimmerman.
Still, I think that there’s a lot of controversy going around and the Electronic music community MUST do something if they don’t want to lose one of its biggest stars.

Ya know, for some reason I actually thought this guy was more level-headed than this. I am not gonna bother talking about how stupid this was, I can see everyone else has already ripped him a new one.
I will, however, argue the point that he made about how DJ’s have no skill. First of all, a huge number of the producers who make up the industry STARTED as DJ’s, so many should take offense to this, not just DJ’s, but producers who got their start in the industry as DJ’s.
Secondly, this era where everyone produces music is still new, 10 years ago it was the DJ’s who dominated the scene. Guys like Paul Oakenfold soar to the top of the world without ever producing anything, Sasha and Digweed DJ’d and conquered the world well before they ever stepped in a studio to produce a track. Deadmau5 is a backwards success, who only DJ’s because he is not skilled enough to actually do a live show like Chemical Brothers or Cosmic Baby (Who does one of the best Live PAs anyone would EVER see)
So Joel, you are only biting yourself in the ass, as you make your money primarily by DJing (all pre-planned, all you may do is throw some FX)… if you hate DJs so much, then stop releasing your music on Beatport for DJs to buy, and go sign a deal with a major label and do a live concert playing every note. Up until this point I considered myself a deadmau5 fan, but no more….. not after he has shown just how unappreciative he is of the people who have supported him and gotten him in the position to where a comment like this received so much response.

DJ stands for DISC JOCKEY, nothing more… so to insult US because all we do is play DISCS is FUCKING RETARDED!!! But we don’t just play DISCS, we loop, throw effects/filters, scratch, sample, etc….
…and YES, anyone can DJ just as much as anyone can PRODUCE, both crafts deserve respect as they BOTH require a shit load of practice and patience to develop skills… but we all had ZERO skills at one point!!!

i mean i guess BENNY BENASSI is a HUUUUGE CUNT too since ALLE BENASSI is really the producer in most if not all “BENASSI” tracks… even BENASSI in his recent interview with FUTURE MUSIC even admits that he just the DJ, and his cousin ALLE is the producer…
But together they work as a team DJ + PRODUCER to tweak that BENASSI sound everyone loves to hear and will last forever unlike one hit wonders like FAXING BERLIN which got some attention from the world’s best DJ (IMO) TIESTO, which started as a DJ, although he produces some now, but predominantly he is still known as DJ TIESTO and his brilliant performances.
The MUSIC industry is all about being positive to new and current DJ’s to continue to build the scene that we ALL ENJOY in 2008 and beyond…

Personally i think deadmau5 has turning into an old man that talks about the ‘old days’ bitching about todays culture and todays Djs. But the fact is the rave culture that he thrived has moved on and todays scene is much more different than his. Hes somewhat stuck in the past when really you should respect the modren progression of music (you dont have to love it but dont diss it). Its the same old thing of one lover of a genre ripping on another (hip hop vs rock) personally i think its a little narrow minded of him to make these comments. Personally i think a majority of deadmau5′s productions are minimal and while his production is ‘tight’ with changes and EQ’s even that can be considers meger to other musical types his mainstream hits are largey an effort to boost his ego so he can say hey look at this i can produce cheese and ppl will buy it. While i agree that alot of Dj’s do just mix track into track at the same tempo and are praised for it. But being a Dj isnt about the music..its about the atmostphere you create.(with music either yours or someone elses)..its about being the life of the party..and getting people to love the now. While a Dj is the middle man he is the person bringing the track to life. While Deadmua5 denounces elitists by making these comments hes one of them. I think its funny – especially coming from Deadmau5 (his BSOD counterpart producing primarily dirty house music) that hes actually bagging on djs..
First of all there are hundreds of different types of dj’s and i think the main version we are talking about here are trance style fade in/fade out dj’s
What suprises me is that most of the Electro/Dirty/Fidget/Wonky House players (Music that BSOD produces) have a much more urban hip hop based mixing style, which in my oppinion takes a HELLA lot more skill to do than simply beatmatching.

Deadmau5 is good at what he does, end of… Producing unrivaled floorfiller tracks like not exactly & slip, he’s played by his peers nuff said, he’s been involved in music production for most of his adult life and he helped with development of home studio software, give the guy a break, ive seen him live recently. he doesn’t just play his own tracks.

That’s like jazz musicians soloing all the fuckin’ time. Scratch DJing is the closest thing to musicianship on a turntable. So it requires waaaaaaaaaaaay longer than 3 months to get a handle on it. QBert is a great master at SCRATCH DJING. I’ve heard many people complain about his party rocking. Paul Oakenfold has rocked many many many parties.. and does it well. But good luck in a scratch competition Paul. By the way, I’m a DMC competitor who’s been in QBert videos and has been nationally ranked in DMC comps. I’m also musically trained through college and graduated with honours. I now play more than just “turntables”. Trust me, I know my shit.

As for your Marxman comment, I know tonnes about DJing. I’ve been across the world to do so, I’ve been nationally ranked in my country in the DMC’s AND I’m a graduated music student. So I know my shit. Therefore, you can’t diss Marxman because he’s right. Think about it in YOUR view of technicality of DJing:
You can build a set for electro and then have that fail at a hip hop show. So play hip hop.
But building a set does NOT require the very important, minimum amount of practice a day through repetition of rudiments in order for your muscles to establish memory. You’re mearly picking songs to please a crowd or even selfishly, yourself. So, don’t try to say that you got TENDONITIS from picking songs.
